WINDOW PINS SECURITY:
THE INVISIBLE LOCK

You don't always need massive bars to stop a thief. Sometimes, a simple steel pin is the difference between a secure home and a break-in. Learn the art of "pinning" your windows.

🛠️ HOW IT WORKS

Window pins security is a technique used primarily on double-hung windows (windows that slide up and down) or sliding windows. It involves drilling a hole through the inner sash and halfway into the outer sash, then inserting a steel pin.

🛑

TOTAL LOCKOUT

Prevents the window from being raised from the outside, even if the main latch is pried open.

🌬️

VENTILATION MODE

Drill a second hole 4 inches up. This allows you to lock the window while keeping it slightly open for air.

LOW COST

One of the cheapest security upgrades available. Costs pennies, saves thousands.

NAILS VS. DEDICATED PINS

Many homeowners try to DIY this with common nails. While better than nothing, nails can bend or fall out.

  • 🔨 THE NAIL METHOD: Cheap but risky. Nails can rust or slip out if the window is rattled violently.
  • 🔩 THE SECURITY PIN: Hardened steel pins with a specialized head that prevents removal from the exterior but allows easy removal from inside.
  • 🗝️ KEYED PINS: For maximum security, some pins lock with a key, preventing an intruder from breaking the glass and pulling the pin out.

⚙️ INSTALLATION STEPS

Adding window pins is a quick project, but precision is key. One wrong drill hole can ruin your window sash (especially on vinyl windows).

STEP 1: CLOSE & LOCK

Ensure the window is fully closed and the primary latch is engaged.

STEP 2: DRILL ANGLE

Drill a hole at a slight downward angle through the inside sash and 3/4 of the way into the outside sash. DO NOT go all the way through to the outside!

STEP 3: INSERT PIN

Slide the steel pin into the hole. Test that it fits snugly but can be removed by an adult easily.

Window pins are great for secondary security. But for ground-level windows facing the street, you need visible deterrence.
