UNIVERSAL RULE — ALL 50 STATES
THE UNIVERSAL RULE ACROSS ALL US STATES
All 50 states and DC either mandate or are in the process of adopting the International Building Code (IBC). IBC Section 1030 and IRC Section R310 both require:
→Security bars on bedroom windows must have inside-operable quick-release
→Release must be operable without special knowledge, tools, or keys
→Mechanism must be accessible to occupants, including children and elderly
→FHA-insured mortgages require compliance for financing
Note: Non-bedroom windows (kitchen, living room, basement) generally have no egress requirement. Only bedroom/sleeping areas are subject to these codes.
